Frequently referred to as the “Roof of Africa” because of the wonderful highlands rising to 4,620 metres at the summit of Ras Dashen. Huge mountain ranges cleft by the Great Rift Valley and further riven by enormous gorges. Lake Tana, the highest large body of water in Africa, is huge, it is more like an inland sea and gives birth to the Blue Nile that twists and turns through some of the largest gorges on earth as it wends its way to Egypt.

Forget the media visions that have so warped the view of Ethiopia, think instead of one of the most interesting, beautiful and diverse countries; Ethiopia is large, over 1 million square kilometers, diverse: from mountain heights to the Danikil Depression (116 metres below sea level), the cradle of civilisation, Christianity older than Europe’s, legends surrounding the Queen of Sheba and the Ark of the Covenant, ancient civilizations that traded with Rome.

So much to see - Lalibela with its world renowned 8th wonder of the world:  11 incredible rock hewn churches, Axum where ancient stelae pierce the sky (some of the largest carved monoliths anywhere in the world), also the fabled home of the Ark of the Covenant and nearby Yeha an ancient temple. Gondar, with its medieval castles and palace ruins, the whole place reminds one of Camelot with its lawns and castles. Lake Tana the highest large body of freshwater in Africa and source of the Blue Nile, take a boat past the monastery islands and visit the ancient monastery of Kidane Mihiret with beautiful paintings and manuscripts. Relax by the lake or walk to the Blue Nile Falls and enjoy lovely scenery, interesting people and (providing the hydro water authorities allow full water flow) one of the most spectacular falls in Africa. Visit Harer the fourth holiest city in Islam, experience the forgotten tribes of the Omo Valley.
